Coyotes halt Bobcats' post-season dreams

Bursting through • Tyce Porter breaks through a hole in the Bobcat defensive line before being tackled by Ty Rix. Porter led Anselmo-Merna's rushing corps, racking up 85 yards on 10 carries during Thursday's first-round football playoff game, in Merna. The Coyotes defeated Summerland, 36-6.

Summerland faced a stingy Anselmo-Merna squad, Thursday, in the first round of the 2021 Nebraska School Activities Association Football Playoffs.

The Coyotes' defense held the Bobcats to 187 all-purpose yards en route to a 36-6 win, in Merna.

The Bobcat defense held the home team to one touchdown in each of the first two quarters, and after a scoreless third quarter, seemed to be picking up momentum.

Then, A-M intercepted a Bobcat pass punching it in for a pick six and added the PAT to go up 24-0.

Trevor Thomson scampered down field for the Bobcats lone touchdown.

The Coyotes scored two more times before time expired.

Anselmo-Merna ran only four more plays than the Bobcats, with a 75-71 edge and doubled the number of first downs, 12-6.


The Bobcats were called for five penalties, resulting in 35 yards. The Coyotes put laundry on the field nine times, accumulating 95 penalty yards.

Mason Hoke threw for a .364 completion rate, connecting on 4 of 11 passes for 43 yards.

Thomson led the Bobcat rushing effort, running 93 yards on 17 carries.

Freshman Alec Schindler caught two passes for 28 yards.

Logan Mueller ended his senior season with 11 tackles, including two solo takedowns and one tackle for loss. Thomson finished with 10 tackles.

On the season, Thomson rushed for 1,861 yards on 186 carries. He scored 25 rushing touchdowns and averaged 206.8 yards per game.
