Kerkman will represent Clearwater Legion at Cornhusker Girls State

Emma Kerkman will represent Clearwater's American Legion Post Auxiliary at Cornhusker Girls State.

Emma Kerkman, a Summerland-Clearwater junior, will represent Clearwater American Legion Post 267 Auxiliary at the 2021 session of Cornhusker Girls State.

She is the daughter of Kelly and Amy Kerkman.

Kerkman applied for Girls' State because the annual event, which focuses on citizenship and government education, because it offers "a great opportunity and a great experience.

"I feel like you can get a lot out of Girls State and make amazing friendships," Kerman said. "Although COVID has put some minor setbacks for Girls Sate, I am still very grateful for this amazing opportunity that I get to experience."


While attending the virtual session, planned for June 13 through 18, Kerkman hopes to gain a better understanding of government and how the country runs.

Girls State citizens are divided into two political parties, giving attendees an opportunity to learn the structure of a two-party system.

Citizens campaign and run for public office.Kerkman said she is interested in education and will plan to run for an office associated with it.

She participates in multiple school activities, including volleyball, basketball, FFA, choir and one-act play production.

Kerkman is a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church, in Clearwater and takes part in CCD.
