Brenna Wagner steps to the line, dribbles three times, spins the ball, letting it bounce on the floor before catching it, takes aim and sends an arching shot to the basket.

Swoosh. Piece of cake.

The Summerland senior's free throw, taken against St. Mary's, Jan. 14, cemented Wagner's name in the school's basketball history books, giving her 1,000 career points.

Coach Greg Appleby said Wagner needed 13 points to hit the mark last Thursday. She ended with 17.

Wagner has been in love with the game since first grade and credits her dad, TeamMates and coaching staff for giving her opportunities for success.

Her dad, Jeremy, may be her biggest fan. He's definitely inspired her to seek and develop success.

"He's always walked through games with me afterward and told me what to do better. He took time to go to the gym and helped me with my shot."

As a freshman and sophomore, she could be found perfecting her shot outdoors.

Even in the snow.

"I'd scoop off the basketball courst by our house and shoot," she said.

During the offseason, Wagner puts in additional work, perfecting her craft.

Wagner says former Bobcat Ashley Koenig "pushed me to be my best. When I was at my worst on the court, she would calm me down."

This year, Wagner has relied on Maryssa Long and Avery Cheatum to sooth the waters, and most of the time, that's meant smooth sailing for Wagner and the Lady Cats.

Bobcat coach Greg Appleby said Wagner "is a uniquely talented athlete in that she can play anywhere, from the point guard position to the low post position."

The Bobcat skipper called Wagner "ultra-competitive," a trait displayed by great athletes.

"She does what is needed for our team to have success," he said.
