High fives and well wishes • On Dec. 17, prior to school dismissing for holiday break, Summerland-Ewing elementary students line the hallway, offering high fives and words of encouragement to instructor Barb Roland, who is battling cancer. Students sang "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" to the long-time instructor. Roland has begun hospice care and will not return to teach when second semester begins in January.

Six Summerland School certified staff members submitted letters of resignation at the board of education's Dec. 14 meeting, in Orchard.

Amy Ritter, first grade instructor, in Ewing, submitted an application for the early retirement program.

Barb Roland, Title 1 coordinator, submitted her resignation, effective at the end of the first semester.

Jan Schwager, part-time counselor at the Ewing site, will not return in the fall.

Carrie Williamson, technology and business instructor, at Orchard, tendered her resignation, as did Jessy Hilkemeier, ag instructor and FFA advisor, in Orchard.

Ewing art instructor Jan Miller also announced her resignation at the meeting.

After discussion, board members opted to contract with ESU 8 for a technology position.

Board members also directed principals Greg Appleby, Mike Sanne and Cathy Cooper to formulate a plan for duty assignments for the 2021-2022 school year.

The plan will be presented to board members during a Jan. 7 special meeting.
